Electrical conductivity and Meyer–Neldel rule: The role of localized states in hydrogenated amorphous silicon

چکیده
The Meyer–Neldel rule (MNR) has been observed in recent calculations of the electrical conductivity of hydrogenated amorphous silicon. To elucidate the origin of this effect, we have performed comparative studies on crystalline Si and non-hydrogenated a-Si. We find that the MNR is not present in the crystal, and is present in a-Si. This suggests that the existence of localized states and the energy dependence of the electron-lattice coupling for these states is an essential feature of the MNR for amorphous phases of silicon. 2008 Elsevier B.V. Ab initio estimate of temperature dependence of electrical conductivity in a model amorphous material: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon
We present an ab initio calculation of the dc conductivity of amorphous silicon and hydrogenated amorphous silicon. The Kubo-Greenwood formula is used to obtain the dc conductivity, by thermal averaging over extended dynamical simulation. Its application to disordered solids is discussed. The conductivity is computed for a wide range of temperatures and doping is explored in a naive way by shif...
متن کاملPhonon driven transport in amorphous semiconductors: transition probabilities
Starting from Holstein’s work on small polaron hopping, the evolution equations for localized and extended states in the presence of atomic vibrations are systematically derived for an amorphous semiconductor. The transition probabilities are obtained for transitions between all combinations of localized and extended states. For any transition process involving a localized state, the activation...
متن کاملAlternative approach to computing transport coefficients: application to conductivity and Hall coefficient of hydrogenated amorphous silicon.
We introduce a theoretical framework for computing transport coefficients for complex materials with extended states, and defect or band-tail states originating from static topological disorder. As a first example, we resolve long-standing inconsistencies between experiment and theory pertaining to the conductivity and Hall mobility for amorphous silicon and show that the Hall sign anomaly is a...
متن کاملRestricted epitaxial growth during thermal crystallization of nanocrystalline silicon: experiments and modeling
Hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) has attracted greater attention because of its improved transport properties with respect to hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) [1]. In addition, its deposition conditions are compatible with amorphous silicon technology which makes it possible to use both materials in the same device. In this sense, it has been proposed as a candidate for the...

Renewable energy research has created a push for new materials one of the most attractive material in this field is quantum confined hybrid silicon nano-structures (nc-Si:H) embedded in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). The essential step for this investigation is studying a-Si and its ability to produce quantum confinement (QC) in nc-Si: H. Increasing the gap of a-Si system causes solar...
